Description of Incident
A young boy has died after falling 20ft into a canal basin.

The emergency services were called to Stourport Basin in Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire, just before midday on Friday.

Detective Inspector Dean Jones of West Mercia Police said: "Following an extensive search, a young boy was pulled from the water at around 12.35pm.

"Attempts were made to resuscitate him and he was airlifted to Birmingham Children's Hospital. However he was sadly confirmed dead at around 1.45pm."

West Midlands Ambulance Service said the boy had fallen 20ft into the canal lock near the old Tontine pub.

An ambulance, rapid response vehicle and two air ambulances from bases in Cosford and Strensham were sent to the scene before the boy, who has not yet been identified, was airlifted to hospital.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "The lock had to be drained of water to enable ambulance crews and other emergency services to locate and retrieve the child."

Police asked anybody with any information to contact the force 0300 333 3000 quoting incident 261-s-030611.
